The Garden of the Nightingale

The Garden of the Nightingale

“In the garden one saw the most wonderful flowers, and to the most splendid of them silver bells were tied, which tinkled so that no one should pass by without noticing the flower. Everything in the Emperor’s garden was most ingeniously arranged…
… In the branches lived a nightingale, whose song was so beautiful … And the nightingale sang so wonderfully that tears came into the Emperor’s eyes.”

— Hans Christian Andersen, The Nightingale

In The Garden of the Nightingale, nature is brought indoors and transformed into image, ornament and illusion. The works draw on the garden as a place where nature is cultivated, arranged and made beautiful — a nature shaped by human hands.

This tension between the natural and the artificial runs through my practice. I often work with representations of nature while deliberately allowing them to remain constructed: flowers, birds and landscapes that evoke nature without pretending to be nature itself.

Like the Emperor’s garden in Andersen’s tale, beauty can be seductive precisely because it has been arranged. Yet it is never entirely stable. Beneath the ornament lies something transient and uncontrollable — a tension between our desire to preserve beauty and nature’s constant tendency to change.
